Norse swept in weekend series against SIUE; Kreimer and Schultz play last game for Norse

East Alton, Illinois - The Norse wrapped up a disappointing fall semester, traveling to play the Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville Cougars.

Friday night, the Norse were able to keep the score close for two periods - only trailing 3-1 at the start of the 3rd, but the Cougars were able to pull away late and won 9-2.  Norse goals were scored by senior captain, Nick Williams and senior assistant captain, Adam Engels.

On Saturday, the Norse continued to struggle, going down 5-0 in the first period.  The final score was 11-0.

Saturday marked the final game for seniors Justin Kreimer and Wade Schultz.

Justin Kreimer's first season with the Norse was 2007 - 2008, when the team went to the ACHA North Regional Tournament.  Initially, Justin played forward and saw limited action.  During the 2008 - 2009, Justin moved to defense and developed his game as an offensive threat from the blue line.  Justin was a leader for the Norse, always ready and able to provide a big hit or a heavy shot from the point.

Wade Schultz's first season was one year after Justin's, 2008 - 2009.  Despite being one of the smaller players on the team, Wade was one of the toughest.  Aside from being one of the toughest players on the ice, Wade was also one of the fastest.

Congratulations to seniors Wade Schultz and Justin Kreimer.

Norse Defense Holds Strong for the Win

The Northern Kentucky Norse Hockey Club was able to hold on for a win tonight, 2 to 1 over Eastern Kentucky.

The first period saw no scoring, but many scoring opportunities by the Norse.  Seniors Adam Engels and Justin Kreimer led the hard hitting Norse attack.

In the second period, Senior Captain Nick Williams, started the scoring for the Norse on an assist from Kreimer.  Adam Engels was able to continue the scoring, giving the Norse a 2 goal lead.  EKU was able to get within one goal, but that is as close as they would get.

The third period was all Norse D.  Multiple penalties were killed off by the Norse and goaltender Martin Paul turned away the EKU attempts giving Head Coach Eric Miller his first win of the season.

The Norse are off next weekend, but will be back on the road versus the College of Wooster, October 21st and 22nd.

Norse Fall In Shoot-out Loss

The Norse Hockey Club travelled to Lexington, KY on Friday night, to take on the Eastern Kentucky University Colonels and left the bluegrass region with a shoot out loss.

EKU got out to an early 1-0 lead in the opening period, but the Norse were able to draw even by the close of the first.

The second period was all Norse as they were able to mount an solid attack, peppering the EKU goalie with many shots and controlling puck possession for most of the period.  At the second intermission, NKU led EKU 2-1.

In the third, the EKU was able to tie the score and then take the lead, but the Norse battled back to tie with 4:12 remaining.  EKU was able to score with only 1:41 left, putting them ahead 4-3.  It looked bleak for the Norse, but they were able to battle back again and tied the Colonels, with 17 seconds remaining in the game.

Overtime had it's fair share of chances for both teams.  The Norse were able to survive a 2 minute penalty, but were unable to net the winning goal.  The game then went to a 3 man shoot-out.  NKU players were 1 for 3 in the shoot-out versus EKU's 2 for 2 performance, earning EKU the win.

The Norse look to rebound tonight at 7:30PM when EKU visits the Northern Kentucky Ice Center to play round 2.  Tickets are only $5!  For directions, please see the schedule page.
